I am lucky enough to be in a good job, and earning more than I could ever have hoped for a few years ago. This year for my mother’s birthday I got her a prepaid gift card. Now I know a prepaid gift card isn’t exactly a normal gift for your mother, but I just felt like it was about time I treated her to something she has never really had in her life – money. She has spent all of her life working hard to help support her five children, and she has never actually had any for herself.

I just thought that whilst I was in a position to help her out financially, I would. When I first gave it to her, she would not accept it, and it took a lot of persuading to turn her around. I told her that I would put some money into it every month, and that this was for her to spend on herself, and to go out and pamper herself and enjoy a few trips away etc.

I know that I might never earn as much as this again and therefore may never be able to offer her this much money again, so I wanted her to take it whilst it was there. Luckily for her I am not the only one who earns a decent wage, and one of my brothers has also agreed to deposit some money into the account every so often when he can afford it. My other siblings are less well off, but think that the prepaid gift card was a great idea. They are going to use it to transfer a little money into the account at Christmas. This way, with all of the combined money, she will be able to treat herself to something special like botox in essex.

It feels good to be able to give something back to her, as she has helped us all so much, and I know that I would not be where I was today without her help. She would never accept a cash hand out each month, but somehow it seems a little different for her if it just gets transferred straight into an account. We never say how much we are putting in, so she does not know whether I have put in $200 or my brother has; or we have both put $100 in. I like it that way.

On the other hand, there have been times when my graphic designs have been rejected outright. Needless to say, I cannot rate my abilities and skills on the basis of what others say. This is the reason why I developed a spiritual outlook towards life. There are many graphic designers in the market who have made it big simply because they were in the right place at the right time. This may apply to me as well if I make it big in a year or two. In such a scenario, I feel it is important to understand the inherent unpredictability of it all.

It is never dependent on talent alone. Can you say that every successful person you have met is talented and deserving of the success? Well, there is no way I can say that each and every advertisement that I see on pop up display has been made by a graphic designer who truly deserved the break that he or she got. In such a scenario, a spiritual and detached attitude towards life can make a huge difference.

Some confuse my spiritual approach with religion. These are two completely different things. Spiritual discipline helps me console myself when I face failure and helps me stay under control when I meet success.

I awoke today feeling as though I wanted to share some of my insight with the world. Now, this doesn’t happen every day, I can assure you of that. Many days of the week I wake up feeling like I just want to get on with my job and not speak to anyone. But today is different: I have had a fairly interesting couple of weeks designing some graphics for a corporate company (for some leaflets about NHS nurse jobs to be precise) and this is quite something, I can tell you!

Now, this situation probably shouldn’t have happened. There is a girl in my office who usually does all the corporate design stuff, and it just so happened that when the job came in she was off sick. So it was passed to me, and I was actually quite glad that happened.

You see, designing for corporate companies – and less corporate but still quite formal ones – doesn’t have to mean spending days staring at boring fonts and the like. You can spice things up and still create a great image which is both fun to do and possesses all the formal qualities which these things always do.

for some strange reason, a lot of more formal companies get stuck using greys and boring black and white logos. Bright colours can be eye-catching so don’t forget it!

Here are my tips for designing for corporate things. Who knows, maybe you’ll pick a few things up.

1. Be daring: now, this is easier said than done – being daring takes guts and not everyone appreciates it! But still, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs, right?

2. Don’t be afraid to use bold colours: for some strange reason, a lot of more formal companies get stuck using greys and boring black and white logos. Bright colours can be eye-catching so don’t forget it!

3. Always be sure to deal with just the ONE person at the company. That way you won’t have tons of other opinions flying about, which means that you should have more chance of pushing a more dynamic idea through without too many obstacles.

4. Take influence from things which don’t usually get used in corporate design, why not? There are tons of ideas out there on the street waiting to be used: things like graffiti, Banksy-style stencils and billboard posters all provide ideas which may not be run-of-the-mill, but could well look good when scaled down to suit a business model.
5. Photography is good, and so is fashion: these are both things which must deliver a strong message, while at the same time being funky and cool to all kinds of groups of people.

This is an issue I have long observed in the modern society. There is a gradual change, a slight movement towards a new set of cultural thinking, a new approach to the professional development of oneself. It is both a bothering fact and a curious development. Firstly, because it has been occurring rapidly in the cities and secondly because it affects almost every young person out there.

We are talking about the human machine - a German expression describing the working class man, a person involved in working, providing for his family or working for his career, spending hours in work and sleep in a monotony, day after day. I can easily now see these people on the streets of London - people with suits not seeing anything but the road ahead, faceless expressions, people too busy with deciding matters of corporate responsibility rather than caring just a little bit about the one sitting next to then in the tube.

And before, as I have heard, it has been different. It might just from the movies that I have got this expression or it might be the stories told to me by parents and their parents. Nevertheless, the working man profile is changing. The more demanding the world is becoming, the more obsessed people are getting in terms of their employment. So just like the Germans and the Japanese, the business world of once Warm England has changed - London is becoming less and less lively and more and more concerned about business, money making and so on. From industrial lubricants industries to cleaning companies, it is all about the money making process.

So my conclusion is that the everyday working man has become the German human machine. Quite sad because England was such a smiley and lively place with warm people, gentlemen, ladies with big hats and huge smiley faces.

Well, it doesn’t and will never work like that. A successful ad campaign is a combination of good copywriting, clever design, and easily understandable image. Get one of these factors wrong and it’s not going to work, sorry.

Here is how you can be on your way to having a good flyer:

1) Make sure the information isn’t too overpowering. Include a simple message, the benefits the customer will get from it, and some idea of the price.

2) Make sure the information is centred on the page. Don’t do a bad job of this, because it will look instantly amateur!

3) Don’t use the cheapest paper going, or, if you are going to, make sure the flyer design is very very good.

4) It doesn’t matter what you are selling – Red Diesel London , collars for dogs, whatever – just make sure you use a decent font that is readable. If you are using a log, try and make it as memorable as you can.

5) Last but by no means least, it’s amazing how many firms forget to include their website address! This should be the first thing you think about when designing a flyer.

Not only would you be caught unaware by an attacker, you also may not hear traffic if you are on the side of the road.

You must be aware of the places you are walking at. Avoid bushes and lonely areas where people can easily hide and attack you. Be careful of strangers talking to you while you are outside walking. There is no reason to live in fear of everyone but people asking for directions could be trying to distract you and attack you.

Also consider carrying some self-defense item. Commonly people carry pepper spray or mace to spray in the eyes of an assailant. Exercise is good for you but be sure while you are exercising to be safe.
Walking and jogging can be activities that you can do safely and without much concern if you keep these simple tips in mind when you go for a walk next time. Be safe and be healthy.

When I was at school I was lucky enough to be taught by a very popular teacher: Mr Kinrose was his name, and he was a writer.

The story of Mr Kinrose is a sad and all-too familiar one: he had grown up loving books, tried to be a writer, and never broken through. His life had been one of shattered dreams, and when he came into the class room a big load of them came with him. It weighed him down so much that he stooped.

Mr Kinrose was most well-known for dispatching fantastic writing advice: the problem was, a few years later his direct use of language would see him sacked from school for swearing. Mr Kinrose’s thing was that he got fed-up with triers. He liked doers, and so whenever someone came up with the excuse “couldn’t do that essay cos I didn’t feel like it” Mr Kinrose would get in a rage and sit them down and say “the only way to write properly is to actually write, arse in chair!”

Everyone would laugh, but years later I see his point. So let this be a lesson to you: if you’re struggling with writing something, maybe it’s because your arse is not in chair ENOUGH.

Writing – as well as any work from home data entry position – is a solitary thing, so be sure to get out once your day is done. And that’s what spurs me on, most days: I know that once I am done I will be outside and I’ll feel like I’ve achieved something.
