Villages Are Great

Villages Are Great

Villages have had a hard time of it in the last few years. Once the thriving miniature metropolis’s of Great Britain, villages are now considered “boring” by rude young people, not very interesting to people who come from the big city, and not exactly fun by…well, more people who should be ashamed of themselves. See, for me, being a graphic designer currently living in the hustle and bustle of London, going to villages is a fantastic thing. Mainly because of the getting away from the business of London, but also because the history that is ingrained in these forgotten pockets of the country makes for great inspiration when you run out of design ideas.

Now I shall prove my point: walk around a village and you’ll see jolly pub signs swinging in the wind – complete with hand-painted picture of dragon chasing after a knight, for example – and amazing signs that were once lovingly hand-painted by a master craftsman. Now that’s a font you won’t find on any of your computer programs, isn’t it? Then there are the carvings. Most villages have monuments in them, many with amazing, intricate words produced by a stone-mason long ago.

Seriously, I know they’re no good if you want tattoo removal or a wild night out, but don’t lay into villages too much. It’s where it all began. While the towns and cities of England progress, possibly not for the better when it comes to design, it is the villages of the past that secure our heritage. You can’t say fairer than that.
